Finding the Right Business for Today’s Economy

Randy Buchter received his degree in mechanical engineering from Penn State University, and enjoyed a successful 27 year long career as a design engineer. “During the last 9 years, I worked mostly from my home, so it was not much of a stretch for me to consider having my own business, as I already had the office and had worked as a self employed contractor several times.”

Buchter is married with two teenaged children. The Buchter family moved to Colorado from Pennsylvania 10 years ago. Like so many hard-working employees, the challenging economy was not kind to Buchter as he explained; “I was laid off in early March, and after a few months of looking for an engineering job, and realizing they just were not out there, I decided to look into setting up my own business.”

Finding a Business
Buchter began doing his research by using several search engines to look for franchises available in his local area. That is when he discovered FranchiseSolutions.com. “As a longtime and heavy user of the internet, Franchise Solutions was very easy to navigate. Everything went through very quickly,” he recalls.

Narrowing down the available business categories, Buchter decided he wanted to own a business that utilized his enjoyment of doing home projects. He said, ‘I have done many home projects over the years, including a good amount of carpentry, and thought at first about setting up a handyman business. However that field is already very competitive, especially in these hard times, and the initial investment is much larger than I was comfortable with. All the while I was doing my searches, Furniture Medic kept popping up.”

Bucter highly recommends FranchiseSolutions.com to others that are interested in finding a business to own. He commented, “Franchise Solutions was very good in showing me a wide variety of franchise possibilities. Just like everyone else, I hate spam, and do not care for companies that sell my email address. I have had no indication that Franchise Solutions has shared or sold my contact info. That’s great, and I would have no problem recommending Franchise Solutions.”

The Right Business At the Perfect Time
Furniture Medic, the largest furniture and wood repair and restoration company in the world, offers services that are in high demand by a wide range of customers. From those trying to save beloved family heirlooms to consumers who would rather save money repairing their furniture instead of buying new furniture, the brand’s services make economic sense as well as being earth-friendly. With a greater awareness of green living practices, more consumers than ever are interested in the services that the brand has to offer.

After doing plenty of research, Buchter decided Furniture Medic, which is a highly affordable franchise to own, was the right business for him. It met his needs and interests and seemed like a business that would thrive, even during a recession. “Furniture Medic has no significant competition, and that was appealing to me, as it should be to anybody. Furniture Medic allows me to use many of my engineering skills in resolving problems, such as broken pieces of furniture, and understand how and why the various procedures and techniques work. I think a lot of people are looking to make their furniture last longer, continue to look great, and save more of their money. Repaired furniture does not go into landfills prematurely. I am very detail oriented, and that is used heavily in this line of work. Also, of the various franchises I looked at, Furniture Medic was the only one that offered financing assistance. All the others would have required me to tap into my retirement savings, which I was not about to do,” he said.

Buchter feels positively about his new business. He recently attended training and was ecstatic that, “While driving to Memphis for training, I had two requests for service calls! Since then, I have had several more requests, and all have been leads from the Furniture Medic website. As I get my yellow pages ads and more internet search hits, I am hopeful things will take off at a good pace.”

A Highly Recommended Business
With no professional experience in the furniture repair industry, Buchter feels ready to open his new business because of the solid training and ongoing support he has received. He said, “The training was great. Very detailed and hands on. The trainers also handle the tech support hot line, so I now have a relationship with them, which is much better than dealing with anonymous people that don’t know me. I have a large assortment of tools and supplies that came in my startup package, and I supplement that with my own tools or purchase others. I believe I can handle a large percentage of the situations I will be faced with on my own, and I have great support for the rest of them.”

Buchter concluded by explaining that he would happily recommend Furniture Medic to other prospective franchise owners. “Furniture Medic has been very accommodating to me, knowing I was unemployed, and worked with me to get me up and running in a timely fashion without skipping any of the steps they believe are necessary for a good franchise.”
