Franchises Require More Support Than Business Opportunities

For many people considering business ownership, franchises and business opportunities are wise investments; interested buyers don’t need to re-invent the wheel to become successful. Because both business opportunities and franchises offer the advantageous buyer an opportunity to invest in a business with an established reputation and a proven track record, both are smart options. Although both franchises and business opportunities share many similarities, there are also a host of differences between the two. Business Opportunities and Franchises offer the buyer different levels of support and training. Depending on what the buyer is looking for, one type may be a better fit for the buyer than the other.

Franchises are a type of business that companies use to expand their market share at a faster rate and less expensive cost. Franchisors sell a right or license to franchisees who want to own a successful business using an already established business. By awarding franchisees the right to market and sell the products and services that franchisors have already found a niche for, both the franchisor and the franchisee stand to make a profit.

In exchange for a fee, the franchisee is awarded the right to use the same business practices that the parent company has found success with. Franchises are appealing because the consumer is buying into a successful company with a proven business plan. The franchisee is trained by the parent company to open and sustain a business that emulates an already proven system. Once a new franchise location is up and running, the franchisee is supported by the franchisor and given the necessary tools to continue expanding the parent company’s brand and image. An important partnership is created because the franchisee and the franchisor will independently be more successful if they are working together to strengthen brand identity and customer loyalty. Franchises vary from business opportunities because unlike a franchise, the success of a business opportunity does not rely on long-lasting partnership between buyer and seller.

A business opportunity involves a buyer purchasing or leasing a product or equipment from the licensor. There are negotiations up front and the licensor will often help the buyer find an appropriate location for the product being sold. Beyond the initial start up assistance, the relationship with the buyer and the licensor is generally limited. Unlike a franchise, business opportunities don’t have royalty fees or contracts. Because less direction is given by the parent company, the amount of support and contact needed to be successful is less than that of a franchise. While both business opportunities and franchises offer support up front and continued support when needed, business opportunities do not require nearly as much communication once the sale has been made.

For people who want to open a business that will have a large network of support and ongoing communication, a franchise is most likely the best option. If a business that lets you go out and explore the market without a lot of necessary communication with the parent company is more appealing, a business opportunity is probably the better fit.
