About
A Little SonderCenters History
SonderCenters was born in Denver, Colorado, in 2009 to solve the very real problem of helping its founder (Sean Boyd), a mental health professional and his colleagues survive the leap to private practice. Sean saw other therapists leaving the mental health agency world, making the leap to private practice and failing to survive. Rather than follow in their footsteps he had the idea “what if we all worked together in the same space to share best practices, referrals as well as what’s working and not working to grow our practices.”
That year he took out a lease on a commercial space, subleased it to his friends and colleagues and successfully started the first SonderCenters location. It worked in that they all survived the leap to private practice and he made profit on the space. In 2012, he sold his first franchise to one of the occupants of the original space. Since that year he has successfully opened up 5 more company locations and sold 37 franchise units in two states.
The Industry
The behavioral health industry is growing at an exponential rate. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Association projects the industry spending in 2020 will reach $280 Billion.
In addition to this sizable growth in spending, cultural trends are favorable as the millennial generation - larger than even the baby boomer generation - is considered to be both the most afflicted by mental health issues of any generation to date due to the combination of poor timing as they entered the workforce in the great recession of 2008 and under the anxiety-inducing burden of social media. Combined, they are expected to increase usage of behavioral health services and significantly reduce the stigma currently associated with seeing a therapist.
The SonderCenters Model
Therapists and other equipment light medical professionals such as massage therapists and acupuncturists are able to utilize SonderCenters locations without signing a 3 to 5 year long-term commercial lease. Instead, as members they simply pay a monthly fee plus any usage fees and can cancel at any time with no long-term obligation.
SonderCenters differs from other opportunities in the following key ways:
- Providers get to maintain their independence. They are not an employee. Instead they are an independent private practice operating within the strength of a community space.
-
SonderCenters allows new providers to scale as their practice grows, thus allowing for a larger pool of potential members for the franchisee.
As a franchisee, you work with us to identify and secure office space, oversee the build out and market to local medical providers. Once a location is up and running, franchise owners allocate 5-10 hours a month.
Benefits
- Low franchise fee
- Low initial investment
- Semi-absentee and absentee models
- Simple business model
- Proven track record
- Growing industry
- Easy to market
